i remember my kids being concerned about litter -- my wild guess is that this is an expression of social responsibility, something even elementary school kids can help with.  and mine did.  i remember camping trips where we picked up litter along the paths or on the beach; in middle school, they both did community service cleanup projects, too.

did this make their rooms cleaner?  alas, no.</description>
